William J. "Dub" Davis, 81, a lifelong resident of Taylor County, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at an Abilene medical center.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Highland Church of Christ Atrium with Russell Harris and Bob Cheatham officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery directed by Elliott- Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Davis was born to Rayburn Eugene and Stella (Campbell) Davis on October 26, 1921, in Abilene, Texas. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army Air Corps Army of Occupation in Germany as a control tower operator.
In 1948, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry, and later received a Masters degree, both from Texas Tech University. He was a retired educator, having taught for the Abilene Independent School District and Tri-County Education Co-op. He was also a rancher and stock farmer in the Lawn area for seventeen years.
He married Maetta Williams on May 1, 1950, in Abilene, Texas. Mr. Davis was a member of Highland Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gaines Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Maetta Davis of Abilene; a son, Rayburn Davis of Sweetwater; a daughter, Janet McLennan of Abilene; two grandsons, Mark and John McLennan; a sister-in-law, Edith Davis of Lamesa; two nephews, Rod Davis of Lubbock and Dell Davis of Conroe; and other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Roy and Annette Williams of Mertzon, TX, Faye and Bob Reynolds of Eldorado, TX, Janell Atchley of Odessa, TX, and Ruth and Marvin Reed of Fort Worth, TX.
