United States Army Major General. Born in New Jersey, during the Revolutionary War he served as a scout on patrols against marauding Indians. After the war, he was engaged in surveying the territory that would become the state of Indiana. In Indiana, he was a farmer and was active in the local militia. He was commissioned a Colonel in the Clark County militia in 1811 and for his leadership during the Battle of Tippecanoe, was promoted to Brigadier General. During the War of 1812, he fought in the White River Campaign and was commissioned as Major General, the highest rank at that time. He served as Major General of the Indiana militia until 1822 and after his military service he became involved in politics. He served on the Indiana General Assembly in 1818 and was elected the Indiana Senate in 1820. He also served on the state board of commissioners for land deeds until he retired in 1825. In 1831, he re-settled in the Illinois territory and participated in the Black Hawk War of 1832. He died at age 74 in McLean County, Illinois.
