U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Calais, Maine. In 1849, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1857. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed by President Buchanan as Second Auditor of the Treasury, (1857-61). He also engaged in the practice of law before the United States Supreme Court and the Court of Claims in Washington, D.C. He died at age 67 while on a visiting his son in Virginia.
