Frank M. Fauver passed away at St Luke Hospital, Maumee, Ohio on February 5, 2014 into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 91. Prior to his retirement in 1977, Frank had been the Superintendent of the Wauseon Union Cemetery for 32 years.
Frank Mathew Fauver was born April 16, 1922 Mathew Frank Wing in Metamora, Ohio the third child of Charles S. Wing Jr. and Opal L. (Hable) Wing. Frank was adopted in 1930 into a loving Christian home by Curtis W. and Ida J. (Schulte) Fauver. Frank married Lois E. Peters of Wauseon on February 11, 1950 in Franklin, Ohio.
With the United States entering World War II, Frank was inducted into the United Sates Army in October of 1942 as an infantryman and completed Rifleman training at Camp Atterbury near Indianapolis, Indiana and Ranger combat training at Camp Breckenridge in Kentucky. He was a member of the Ohio 83rd Infantry Division nicknamed "Thunderbolt". Once in England, the 83rd Infantry Division began preparing for the invasion of Europe under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. They landed on Normandy Beach, France on June 18, 1944, D-Day plus 12, just 2 months after arriving in England. Frank was the recipient of the Expert Combat Infantry Badge, the European Theater of Operation Medal with 5 Battle Stars, the Bronze Star, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Having been baptized into the Christian faith as a youth, Frank was a member of Christ United Methodist Church Wauseon where both his adoptive parents and grand parents were members. Frank was a faithful and supportive member of the church throughout his life, serving in various positions including Adult Sunday School leader and as a Church Board member. With this strong Christian upbringing, Frank ensured that same foundation was passed on to his children, having them baptized and when of age, also becoming members in the Methodist Church.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 265 where he served in various offices including Post Chaplin and Fulton County Commander. He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7424 serving as Post Advocate and many years as Post Chaplin.
When his oldest son turned 8, Frank saw to it that he joined Cub Scouts at which time Frank became a devout supporter of the Boys Scouts of America serving for 40 plus years as a volunteer Scouter in many positions in Pack 8, Troop 8 and Explorer Post 8 including Cubmaster, Den Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and Explorer Post Advisor. He was very proud of the Scouts he helped along the way and enjoyed hiking and camping with them, many years taking them to week long summer camp at Camp Lakota south of Defiance. He also served Scouting as a District Committee member and was District Eagle Scout Board of Review Chairman for over ten years. In 1996 Frank was a recipient of both the District Award of Merit, the highest district level volunteer award and the Silver Beaver Award, the highest Council level award for a volunteer scouter. He was also recognized that year by his fellow Scouting volunteers with a James E. West Fellowship.
Frank is survived by his wife, Lois; two sons Curtis W. (Cathy) of Wauseon, Warren D. (Sue) of Bowling Green, Ohio, and daughter, Pamela J. Fauver of Napoleon, Ohio, 13 grandchildren, 29 great grand children, four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews all of whom he loved very much and who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his infant brother Lester, biological parents Charles and Opal Wing, adoptive parents Curtis and Ida Fauver, infant son Kevin, and older sister Mildred.
Visitation for Frank will be held from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Edgar-Grisier Funeral Home in Wauseon. A Christian funeral service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church Wauseon on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 10:00 A.M., with Pastor Ruth Ann Scoby, officiating. Interment will be in Wauseon Union Cemetery where he will be laid to rest southeast of the cemetery hill on the Fauver family plot next to his adoptive father and mother, wife and son Kevin. There he will continue to watch over the cemetery in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
