Sophie O'Donnell was born 27 Apr 1905 at her parents' house in Aphort, on Aranmore Island, County Donegal, Ireland. Her father, Bryan "Barney" O'Donnell, was a fisherman and her mother, Sile "Cicely" O'Donnell kept house, having moved there from her parents home on the island of Innisfree after marriage.

In 1925 Sophie followed her older brother Neil and emigrated to Bayonne, New Jersey, USA. She travelled aboard the SS California with her cousin Bridget O'Donnell (Condy O'Donnell's daughter and a neighbour on Arranmore). The girls were looking for better work opportunities as domestic servants - Bridget went to Staten Island in New York and Sophie went to stay with Neil at 885 Broadway in Bayonne, New Jersey.

When Sophie's sister also came to Bayonne and married William Boyle, Sophie went to live with them at 64 West 18th Street. Having found steady work as a waitress, Sophie applied for and was granted permanent residence. After a visit home to Ireland at the age of 27, she returned permanently to the US on 13 Sep 1932 aboard the SS Cameronia.

In Bayonne she met Manus Duffy, a second generation County Donegal immigrant, and they were married on 09 Feb 1935. They settled in Bayonne and raised a family of two children and many grandchildren.

Sophie lived to be 100 and is buried with her husband Manus and his mother Grace Duffy.
