Catherine Kelly married Stephen Lyman Bates (son of Stephen Bates & Elizabeth FAG #113476281) in 1828 in Tioga County, New York. Stephen was born about 1805 in New York and died after the 01 Sept 1860 census at Roscoe, Winnebago county, Illinois. They arrived in Winnebago county, Illinois in 1853 or 1854 from New York. Stephen's son, George Bates, and Stephen's brother, Benjamin Bates were already in Winnebago county, moving here before 1850. Stephen and Catherine were parents of 3 daughters and 8 sons; 7 sons, 2 sons-in-law, & brother-in-law Benjamin Bates serving in the Civil War. Her son, Benjamin Bates, stayed home to take care of the family.

Catherine was listed as age 74 with her son Charles L. Bates (Charles died in 1887). Her son Levi moved to Brown county, Nebraska from Seward county in Oct 1880, he was caught in the blizzard of 1880. Catherine came to live with him, probably after 1887, where she died.


Catherine's death date is recorded in family information. Her funeral service was conducted by H. H. Allen at the residence of Levi Bates. Catherine was buried in the cemetery, north of Bassett.
