In 1880, Mary and son, J.H. were living in Clark County, Kentucky and she was enumerated as a widow in the census of that year. Warren Bellows had served as a PVT with Co. C of the 24th Ky Vol Inf, Union, during the Civil War. Mrs. Bellis did not begin drawing a widow's pension for her husband's military service until 1895.
It is unclear as to why the family started using the Bellis spelling of the surname, but the death certificates for Mrs. Bellis, her daughter-in-law and 2 of her grandchildren all record that surname (albeit badly misspelled). Her son, John Houston Bellis, and the rest of his descendants, also bear the Bellis surname.
