J. P. Gilbert, living in the southwest part of the city, died last night at the age of 78 years, from dropsy. The funeral will be held tomorrow.

John and his wife Margaret Matts Gilbert had many children together: James William, Charles F, Elizabeth A, Mary Emma, Hannah M, John Edward "Dick", Ida May, Alexander, Marion, Joseph M, Hiram "Doll" Flemming, Martha “Mattie", Leniota/Oaty, and Agnes.
