Mildred "Irene" Oberlander, who lived in Wolcott more than 80 years, died Wednesday, January 8, 2014. She was 93. Born Feb. 9, 1920, in Jewel Junction, Iowa to Bascom and Lillian (Houk) Allie, she was one of nine children. Her sister, Rosemary Young of Brookston survives.
Irene graduated from Wolcott High School in 1938, where she was on the basketball team and a member of the choir, once singing on the Lafayette radio station, WBAA.
She married Eugene "Gene" Oberlander on Dec. 26 1940, (the same day that he proposed) in LaGrange County, Kentucky. He preceded her in death in 1999.
Irene was the longest living member of the Wolcott Christian Church, where she was treasurer for many years and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and spent decades researching family genealogy. She was in a "We Care" group sending packages monthly to servicemen in Vietnam. She loved to garden, play dominoes, put together puzzles and do crosswords.
In addition to her sister, she is survived by two sons, Richard "Dick" Oberlander (wife: Gay) and Craig Oberlander (wife: Theresa), both of Wolcott. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Oberlander; one daughter, Sharon Long Klink; five sisters, Helen Critser, Edith Dellinger, Ethel Lucas, Leone Owens, and Francis Logan; and two brothers, Raymond and Robert Allie.
Pastor Jeremy Church officiating. Interment to follow in Remington Cemetery.
