Early on, he was a member of the John Ford Stock Company, in which he filled small acting roles, and did mostly un-credited stunt work in western movies before being selected for more substantial roles. He was married to Mary Ann Wilson till his death. They had 3 children Monica, Tinothy and Kathryn.
