Lenoir, NC- Mr. Jay F. Allen, age 83, of Lenoir, passed away on Thursday, January 02, 2014 at the Frye Regional Hospital in Hickory.
Born March 2, 1930 in Caldwell County, Jay was a son of the late Lloyd and Inez Taylor Allen. Jay was a member of the Central Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher. He served as a medic in the United States Army and served in Germany. Jay enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and liked to invent things. He was a co-owner of the House of Arts & Crafts here in Lenoir. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Keith Allen and a brother, Ray Allen.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Toye Allen of the Home; a daughter and son in law, Dawn Allen Sullivan, husband James "Jim", of Hudson; a sister, Faye McMillan of Columbia, SC; 7 grandchildren, James C. Sullivan III, wife Jaime, of Gastonia, Joseph Andrew Sullivan, wife Judith, of Williamsburg, VA, Dr. Anna Marie Overby, husband Nicholas, of Holly Springs, NC , John Paul Sullivan, wife Deidre, of Reidsville, NC, and Roxy Rinehardt, husband Jeremy of Hickory, NC; Sierra Layhew, husband Phillip, of Hickory, NC and Elizabeth Allen of Roan Mountain, TN; Jay is also survived by 10 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
A celebration of Jay's life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor John Jernigan officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
