Homer H. Campbell, a long-time resident of Buchanan Dam passed away at Sterling House in Temple on December 30, 2013, after a very brief illness. Homer was 99 years, 10 months, and 19 days of age.
Homer was born February 11, 1914, in Gonzales to Charles Henry and Ozzie (O'Neal) Campbell. He had two younger brothers, Herbert and W.E. (Dub), both now deceased. In 1919 after the death of Homer's mother, his father moved to Prairie Mt., Texas with the three Campbell boys. Homer formative years were spent as a ranch hand in the Llano area. That is where he met the love of his life, Rachel Elizabeth Isenberger. They were married in Llano on September 6, 1941.
Homer enlisted in the Army in May 1942 and served with the 76th General Hospital Battalion as a cook. One year and 7 month of his tour was served in France, Belgium, and Germany. After his discharge from the Army, the family moved to Missouri where Homer worked in construction and farmed. In 1965 Homer brought his family back to Texas, settling in Buchanan Dam. Homer was the head of maintenance for the Burnet Independent School District until he retired in 1982. He enjoyed his retirement years fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Homer is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rachel, son Leslie Ray Campbell and wife Pat of Buckholts, and daughter Loretta Faye Hughes of Rio Llano. Homer and Rachel's first child, Homer Charles died at 8 months of age. Homer also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other extended family members.
Homer was a handsome man, full of fun, and always willing to share stories with his family. He had seen so many things in his long life that seemed extraordinary to his rapt audience. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, January 3, 2014, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet. The funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bluffton Cemetery
