Novelist. His fame as a writer results principally from his Clayhanger novels, or as they became known the ‘Five Towns’ novels. The towns in question focus on the centre of the pottery industry and refer specifically to Tunstall, Burslem, Stoke, Hanley and Longton. The stories give a grim background to the lives and pretentions of his middle-class characters. Although he became a solicitor after graduating from London University he took up writing and in 1893 was made assistant editor of ‘Woman’ magazine, later becoming the editor. Other notable works include The Old Wives’ Tale in 1908 and Riceyman Steps in 1923.
