Phillip E. Cantonwine was the son of Claude Clifford and Gertrude E. (Freeman) Cantonwine, the grandson of David and Eliza (Elson) Cantonwine, the great-grandson of Michael & Catherine (Myers/Myres) Cantonwine, and the great-great-grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.
Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

For many years Mr. Cantonwine was a motion picture cameraman and during World War II, he was director of photography for the U.S. Air Force at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, as well as for the Navy and Maritime Service. He also did a film for the Interior of Indian Affairs. In addition to his wife and parents, his survivors are three sisters, Mrs. George A. Edward[e]s [Helen, who died July 2006) of El Monte, Mrs. Les Amos of Los Angeles, and Mrs. C. Redman of Burbank; and a brother, George Cantonwine of Santa Monica. Services were held Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills.

Funeral services and burial were in California. Mr. Cantonwine was born on the Cantonwine farm southeast of Vinton, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cantonwine. He grew to manhood in the Vinton community. Surviving are his wife and parents; a brother, George; three sisters, Helen, Caroline and Dorothy; an uncle, Clell Cantonwine and an aunt, Mrs. Blanche Spicer, both of Des Moines, and an aunt, Mrs. Eva Woodruff of Hackensack, Min. An uncle, Bud [E. Budd] Cantonwine, died last week [March 25] and was buried here today.
