Phillip Augustus Arbogast, a well known Confederate veteran of the Civil War, died at his home five miles east of Thomasville in Oregon County yesterday afternoon, at the advanced age of 76 years.
Mr. Arbogast had been a sufferer from heart disease for several years and although he had been in quite a serious condition for some time, his death yesterday came quite unexpectedly. His daughter, Mrs. C.S. Hill, of this city, has been with him much of the time for the past few weeks but had been in West Plains the last two days. She and Mrs. Thomas Walker, another daughter of the descendant, who arrived here yesterday from Los Angeles, Calif., were enroute from this city to Thomasville, when the aged man's death occurred.
The decedent was born in Scranton, Pa. in 1838 and came to Missouri several years before the beginning of the Civil War. He located on a farm in Oregon County, near Thomasville.
In 1860 he was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Howell, daughter of Erasmus Howell, and niece of Thomas Howell, a prominent pioneer settler for whom Howell County was named. Mrs. Arbogast's death occurred twenty-three years ago.
At the close of the war, Mr. Arbogast moved with his family to West Plains and for some time conducted the West Plains House, the oldest hotel now in existence in the city. However he moved back to Thomasville a few years later and has since resided at that place.
The decedent is survived by Mrs. Hill of this place; Mrs. Walker of Los Angeles, Ca.; Mrs. Wm. Barnett of Joplin, Mo.; James Arbogast of Strasbourg, Pa.; and Ed Arbogast of Strasbourg, Pa.
Funeral services for the aged veteran will be held at Thomasville this afternoon and interment will be made in the Thomasville Cemetery.
