Virginia Harp Simpson Brassfield, 89, passed away Sunday, February 20, 2005, in a Fort Smith nursing home. She was born November 7, 1915, in Dayton, Arkansas to Martin B. and Othella Rebecca Clopton Harp.

She grew up on the family farm and attended Mansfield school. On September 29, 1933, she married Lester Willard Simpson, son of Carrell Warren and Martha Della Frizzell Simpson, at Abbott, Virginia and Lester lived at Mansfield until 1942, when they moved to California where Lester and Virginia were employed at Lockheed Aircraft. In 1944, they moved to Sweetwater, Texas, living there for several years, then moved back to Arkansas in 1949, where they farmed, raising strawberries and peaches with Virginia's father and mother. After the death of Virginia's father in 1954, Virginia was employed in the Abbott schools, then later in Mansfield schools. Virginia had fond memories of many children in the schools where she worked.

Virginia and Lester had two children. Virginia's husband, Lester passed away October 27, 1974, leaving Virginia alone. She continued working at Mansfield schools until her retirement in 1974. In 1976, she married John Brassfield, who was a retired miner, John passed away in 1980, again leaving Virginia alone. She valued her firends at the Mansfield Senior Center, where she went every day to exercise, eat lunch and visit.

She is survivied by her sons, grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one sister, one brother, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her late husbands, Lester Simpson and John Brassfield, brothers, Autrey, and Irus L. Harp and one sister Mona Pettus.

Funeral was held Thursday at Coop Prairie Cumberland Presbyterian Church with interment at Coop Prairie Cemetery in Mansfield under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.
