She is very probably born as Geertje Gouwens in April 1871 in the Dutch truck farmers settlement South Holland, Thornton Township, just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Her parents are likely called with the Dutch equivalents of Clarence and Cornelia.
The village of South Holland has nowadays a Gouwens Park and a Gouwens Lane.

Gertie Gouwens married on 7 July 1890 at the age of 19 years to the three years older Nicholas Koedyker at her birthplace South Holland.

They had the following children: Mary (Mrs. John Santefort), Cora (Mrs Leonard Fantefort), Harry, Henrietta, (Mrs. Harry Boomsma), Clara (Mrs. John Barehead), Mabel (Mrs. William Jabaay of Munster), Edith (Mrs James Paarlberg of Lansing) and Clarence.

Her husband Nicholas Koedyker, a resident of South Holland for forty-five years, passed away at their home in January 1935 at the age of 67 years.

In April 1940 Gertrude Koedyker (68), her son Clarence Koedyker (29, born in Illinois, teacher at a public school), her daughter-in-law Henrietta Koedyker (19, Indiana) and her granddaughter Nancy Lou Koedyker (0, Illinois) lived at an own home, worth $3600, in South Holland, [Thornton Township,] Cook County, Illinois. Gertrude and her son Clarence lived in 1935 at the same house, Henrietta lived then in Munster, Lake County, Indiana.

Gertrude died in November 1944 at the age of 73 years, due to a fall down basement stairs, at a hospital in Harvey, Cook County, Illinois.
