James Clayton Ashby was born Sept. 1, 1824. He was the son of Silas and Nancy RADFORD Ashby. James married Mary Frances FOSTER on December 21, 1848 in Putnam County, Indiana. They came to Kansas in 1857 with a group including Bladen and Elizabeth FOSTER Ashby. Bladen was Jim's brother and Elizabeth was Mary's sister. The two families built homes along the same creek. This area later became Baldwin City.
