Robert served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. Murphy (DD-603), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Jackson County, North Carolina prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy on June 25, 1942 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Murphy on August 2, 1942.

The U.S.S. Murphy, while escorting a United Kingdom bound convoy out of New York City, was struck on the port side between the bridge and forward stack by the oil tanker S.S. Bulkoil, 75 miles off the coast of New Jersey. The forward third of the ship sank in 265 feet of water, taking 36 officers and men with it.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

Note: The Murphy survived and was repaired and placed back into action in seven months. The Murphy received four battle stars for World War II service.
