Historical Newspapers @ancestry.com: Fresno Bee Republican 7 May 1952: Five Drown in Crash Through Bridge Near Chico. Hamilton City - UP. Five persons, four of them children, drowned when the car in which they were riding crashed through a bridge railing and plunged into a canal. Only one person in the car was saved - Mrs Bertham [Bertha M?] Ross, the mother of three of the children. Dead were Clifford L Ross, 35, Michael Steven Ross, 7 months, Clifford Leroy Ross 5, Martha Ross 10, all of Orland and Thomas Leon Kane 8 of Hamilton City. Mrs Ross was rescued by Michael Kane, the father of one of the dead children. Highway patrolmen said the accident occurred about 11 o'clock last night as Ross drove west about one and a half miles north of here. The auto crashed through the railing of a bridge across the Glenn-Colusa Irrigation canal. Only the rear of the auto was above the swiftly flowing water. Patrolmen said Ross was following a car driven by Kane on their return from a trip to Chico.
