Clovis William Bowen was born August 24, 1919 in Waco, McLennan, Texas, the second of three sons born to Joel Thomas Bowen and Louisa Jane Dodgion.
Clovis joined the U. S. Marines in 1941 and was stationed in San Diego, California. He eventually was promoted to Private First Class and joined Company C, First Marine Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, which served in the South Pacific during World War II. His company invaded the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands and met fierce enemy resistance resulting in the death of hundreds of brave Marines on the beach. Clovis was among those missing in action at Tarawa on November 21, 1943. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and is memorialized at the National Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii as Corporal Clovis W. Bowen (See FindAGrave.com memorial 56115967).
