Roger Henry Derthick was born Aug 31, 1912 in Livingston, Tenn., one of three sons of Rev. Henry Derthick and Pearle M. Derthick. He died June 25, 1999 in Gilmer county, Georgia nursing home of cancer at age 86, formerly of Atlanta. He was a WWII US Army veteran who served from June 22, 1943 to Jan 8, 1946. He married in Florida, Garnet Edith Williams Derthick of Ellijay.

Mr. Derthick attended Milligan college in Tennessee where his father was President. He earned his masters degree at the U. of Tenn. in Knoxville. During WWII he taught illiterate soldiers to read at Ft Benning and Ft Bragg. He taught in the Atlanta, GA school system for 30 years; was Principal of Henry Grady High School in Atlanta for 16 years amd was President of the Atlanta Teachers Association for 10 years. He attended First Methodist Church in Ellijay.

Roger's funeral was Monday June 28, 1999 at the Cherokee Heights United Methodist Church in Macon, GA, with Rev. Dan Wilson officiating. Entombment was at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta. GA. The Bernhardt Funeral Home in Ellijay, GA handled arrangements.
