Joseph Hlousek III was born 18 July 1874 in Moravia, Austria to Joseph Hlousek II and Antonie (Travnicek) Hlousek. He came to the United States with his family in 1885. They eventually settled around Fairfax, Gregory County, South Dakota. The Hlousek family was a reputable and well-like family in the community.

As a youngster, Joseph suffered a head injury which altered his personality. On 19 November 1901, at the age of 27, Joseph married Anna Kocum, a 19-year-old girl who had recently came from Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, to America and was with her aunts and uncles at Melrose, Wisconsin. Her aunt had answered a mail-order bride ad in her name and without her knowledge, and then put Anna on a train for Fairfax, South Dakota. With no family support, not knowing the language, and having little in money and possessions, Anna married Joseph. Joseph and Anna had two girls, Caroline "Carrie" Rose (b. 11 Mar 1904, d. 11 Sep 1985) and Emma Anna (b. 11 Feb 1905, d. 4 Aug 1994).

Anna filed divorce papers on Joseph and was granted her divorce on 15 December 1908 in Fairfax, South Dakota. At that time, Joseph left Fairfax and moved to Chicago, Illinois.

On 21 May 1910, in Chicago, Joseph married Anna Schnabl. He was 35 years old and she was a 20-year-old, born in Donrazlis, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. They had six children: (Jakob) Norman (b. 6 Dec 1914, d. 26 May 1992); Ignatius Vaclav (b. 26 Apr 1916, d. 1976); Joseph "Joe" Vaclav (b. 10 feb 1918, d. 30 Oct 1979); Ruth (b. 17 Nov 1919, d. 14 Nov 1920 - died at the age of 1 from the measles; Edward (b. 28 Feb 1921, 2 Nov 1990); and Ervin J. (b. 4 Apr 1924, d. 27 Sep 2009).

Until he moved to Chicago, Joseph was a farmer. In Chicago, he was a laborer and a school janitor.
