Richard's father Nicolaas Cornelis remarried about 1896 in Illinois, USA, very probably in or around Chicago, at the age of 37 years to the three years younger Trijntje Cleveringa, also born in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. They immigrated both about 1896 too.

In June 1900 Richard's parents Nicholas and Theresa Auwerda lived with their children Barnie (4 y, born in Holland), [Sara] Elizabeth (18, Holland) and Henry (16, Holland) lived at a rented home at So. Turner Ave. in West Town, just west of Chicago's center, Ward 10, Cook County, Illinois.

Derk alias Richard Auwerda was born in October 1902 in Drexel [western Chicago], Cook County, Illinois son of Nicholas and Theresa Auwerda, named for his maternal grandfather Derk Cleveringa.

In 1910 Richard (7), his father Nick Auwerda (51), his mother Katie (49) and his siblings Barney (14, Holland), Grace (5, Illinois) and John (4, Illinois) lived in Cicero, just west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

The Nicholas Auwerda farm was in 1915 located at 3800 S. Central Ave., Mud Lake in Chicago Sanitary District, in or near Cicero. A photo of the family Auwerda in front of the farm is available in Robert P. Swierenga's book "Dutch Chicago" (published in 2002), page 556. In June 1917 the family is still residing at 3800 S <66> Ave. [today W Ogden Ave, til 1977 part of Route 66], Cicero.

His mother Treintje Auwerda died in December 1925 in Cicero, just west of Chicago city, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 65 years.

Richard Auwerda married on 6 January 1926 at the age of 23 years to the two years younger Eleanor "Ella" Schurman, who had Dutch parents too.

On 7 August 1927 they had in Cicero, Cook County, Illinois daughter Theresa, who died on 21 October 1939 at the age 12 years at Oak Park, just north of Berwyn and west of Chicago, where the family was residing. She was buried in Forest Home, Forest Park, west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They had about 1929 also son Henry Richard Auwerda, who married to Marian Evenhouse, who had the children Kathryn Lou, Vivian Jean, Paul Richard, and Timothy Vernon Auwerda. Henry Richard Auwerda was in 2013 residing in Frankfort, a southern suburb of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1940 Richard Auwerda (37 y, born in Illinois, laundry truck driver), his wife Ella (35, Holland), their sons Henry Auwerda (11, Illinois) and Nicholas (8, Illinois) lived at a rented home in Ward 6 of Berwyn, Berwyn Township, Cook County, Illinois. They lived in 1935 at the same place.

His wife Ella died in 1962 at the age of 58 years. Richard died in August 1977 in Berwyn, Cook County, Illinois, at the age of 74 years.
