Upon the closure of Fort Ransom, all burials were removed to Fort Abercombie and reinterred on 28 June 1876. Tracing the Quartermaster records from Fort Abercombie on to Fort Abraham Lincoln and then to Custer National, the records show the surname mis-spelled as 'Monahan'.
Further research finds him in the 1870 US Census records as a private in the US Army on 7 July 1870 in New York City.
