Born December 24, 1934, in Oto, Iowa to Mervin and Helen (Dolan) Jackson, she graduated from Oto High School, May 1953 and married Donald J Flynn in June. She attended Wayne State (NE) Teachers College earning her teaching certificate in 1955. Her first position was in Dixon County Nebraska's one room country school house. She returned to Wayne to complete her two year teaching degree in 1959. Merlene attended Drake University and completed her BS in 1970. She taught elementary school for Woodward Granger School System for twenty eight years, retiring in 1994.

Her children and grandchildren are Mark (Jennifer Johns), Sean and Sarah; Jeanne Holmes (Chris), Katie & Kelsey; Paul (Erin O'Neill), Megan Welsh (Justin), Andrew & Ryan; Julia Sheehy (Kirk), Stephanie & Kim.
She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association and lifetime member of National Education Association. She was a charter member of Swede Point Questers Club, belonged to Phi Epsilon Beta Kappa, Iowa Button Assoc., National Button Assoc., Iowa Genealogy Society, and Woodbury County Genealogy Society. She was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church in Madrid, IA.

Merlene spent her retirement summers enjoying their lake home and family gatherings there. She also enjoyed bridge club, swimming, cruises, snow skiing, reading and researching genealogy.

She is survived by her husband, Don, children Jeanne, Paul, Julia and their families as well as her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jane Larie Murrell and son Mark.
