Dale Franics Pace was born at Anita, Iowa, on May 16, 1914. His parents were John Harrison Pace and Verdie Irene Walker Pace.

Dale graduated from Massena High School in 1931 and from Drake University in 1944. He participated in all sports in Massena High School. He played basketball at Parsons College and semi-pro baseball on the Onthank team out of Des Moines for several summers.

Dale married Genevieve Elizabeth Groves on January 28, 1939. They had four children: Sandra, Judy, Larry, and David.
