Maude Armatage was the first woman elected to the park board in 1921, and she was the only woman on the board until her retirement in 1951. She promoted cooperation between the school board and park board to avoid duplication of facilities. In 1948, she sponsored a joint resolution between the park board and school board that led directly to cooperative development of Waite, Armatage, Kenny and Cleveland parks and schools. Armatage Park and Armatage elementary school were named for her. She and her husband Arthur built a beautiful house at 4600 Fremont Ave S in the Lynnhurst neighborhood in 1893, when the neighborhood was still mostly rural. where she lived until 1964.
