Lucille Alice (Samuelson) Agard died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, in Ames. Lucille's body has been cremated and a private family graveside memorial service will be at a later date in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Lucille was born March 10, 1920, in Pierce County, Neb., the daughter of Ernest and Bessie (Manger) Samuelson. She attended schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota and graduated from high school in Kiester, Minn., in 1936. She attended college at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn. She taught in rural, one-room schoolhouses in Wright County and Union-Whitten, and was a substitute teacher for the Ames School District.

She married Kenneth Agard Jan. 18, 1942, in Goldfield. She was a busy homemaker with three small children while Kenneth served overseas in World War II. She came to Ames in 1951 where she was a charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She was active in her church, teaching Sunday school and in the Women's Circles. She also was active in the PTA and school activities. She was a member of the Chicago Northwestern Women's Club and later the Postal Wives.

Her interests beyond homemaking were in education, sports, the library, photography and genealogy, and she always appreciated the fine concerts at the historic Ames Bandshell.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Kenneth; two sons, David (Julie), of Kearney, Neb., and Don (Lorna), of Ankeny; two daughters, Judy, of Rohnert Park, Calif., and Beth Arends, of Corvallis, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She also is survived by four brothers, Merrill (Arthemise), of Seattle, Dale (Zibbie), of Cameron Park, Calif., Stanley (Jean), of Osceola, and Wayne (Mary), of Surprise, Ariz.; and one sister, Betty Mize, of Dallas.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Kim and Richard
