His father was Hiram Johnson (born about 1857). His mother was Mary Etta Ham Johnson Hoisington (1859-1941). He had a half-sister, Ethel Hoisington, from his mother's later marriage to Charles Foster Hoisington (1849-1925).

The first several years he resided with his parents in Morehead, Rowan County, Kentucky. By the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, he was a boarder at the home of Leander Padgett in Farmers, Rowan County, Kentucky.

On July 4, 1901 in Rowan County, Kentucky, he married Mary Mollie Padgett Mynhier, widow of George H. Mynhier. The 1910 U.S. Federal Census shows Clarence, Mollie and their daughter Mary Johnson, and Mollie's sons Fred R. Mynhier and Dewey Mynhier residing in Farmers, Rowan County.

On September 12, 1918, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. At the time, he was a section foreman for the C.&.O. R.R. Co. He and Mollie were residing in Preston, Bath, Kentucky.

The family continued to reside in Kentucky until, by the time of the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Clarence, Mollie and their two sons Paul Johnson and Leslie Winfred Johnson have moved to Huntington Beach, Orange County, California.

Census records show that Clarence continued to reside in Huntington Beach for the rest of his life. Sadly, Mollie passed away in 1936. The 1940 U.S. Federal Census shows that Clarence resided in Huntington Beach at the same address on Geneva Street in 1935, and again in 1940 where he was residing with his mother Mary Etta Ham Johnson Hoisington and his son Leslie Winfred Johnson.

Clarence helped to take care of his mother until she passed away in 1941.

Until his death, Clarence was a loving member of the family and valued by the community.
