Harriet Virginia Jones Cook, age 105, died at Richland Place on November 1, 2013. She was born October 21, 1908. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Charles Wilkerson Cook; her mother, Marion Woodall Tucker Jones Cowan; her father, Howard Murfree Jones; her four sisters, Marion J. McLean, Catherine J. Wilson, Carolyn J. Boyd Estes and Martha Jones.
She is survived by her two sons, Charles Wilkerson Cook, Jr. (Mary) and William Compton Cook (Gloria); four grandchildren, Jennie Cook Ross (James), Charles Wilkerson Cook III (Lawrence), John Stephenson Frierson Cook and Anna Cook Young; five great grandchildren, Donald Chandler Young III, Mollie Wilkerson Young, William Compton Young, Margaret Killebrew Cook and Sarah Randolph Cook.
The family wishes to recognize and thank Barbara A. Hollins for her companionship and loving care of Virginia over the past thirteen years. The family also appreciates the care and attention provided by the staff on the Fourth Floor of the Health Center at Richland Place.
Virginia was a graduate of Ward-Belmont School, Nashville and Goucher College, Class of 1929, Baltimore, MD. She was married on September 6, 1930. Shortly after graduation from college, she became a social worker for the Works Progress Administration of the U.S. Government until 1938 when she resigned to care for her children and provide support to her husband which she did until he retired from Genesco in 1970. She was active in the community having served as President of the YWCA in Nashville and as a lifetime member and Vice President of the Centennial Club. She was a volunteer with Cheekwood particularly its gift shop, American Red Cross, Travelers Aid, Community Chest, and United Givers Fund. She was also the oldest member of Belle Meade Country Club and held lifetime memberships in the Ladies Hermitage Association and the Polk Memorial Association. She was an active member of West End United Methodist Church having served on the official board and as its Secretary, being one of the earliest women officers of the church. She will also be remembered for her lifetime love and care of her flower gardens.
Throughout her husband's career, she frequently traveled with him serving as an enthusiastic hostess for his business related entertaining, both domestically and internationally. Following his retirement, they jointly traveled to Tunisia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria with the International Executive Service Corps. during which time Virginia worked as a volunteer with local organizations, especially local YWCAs.
The family will receive visitors in the Reed Room at West End United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. til 12 noon on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Private graveside services for the family will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery immediately after the visitation.
