Son of Willard Mason and Eliza Wood, he was a blacksmith in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts when he enlisted on 4 Sep 1862 as a 1st Lieutenant.
From the Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865, "Commissioned an officer in Company E, Massachusetts 3rd Infantry Regiment on 23 Sep 1862. Mustered out on 26 Jun 1863 at Camp Hooker, Lakeville, MA. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 08 Sep 1863. Commissioned an officer in Company E, Massachusetts 58th Infantry Regiment on 11 Sep 1863. Promoted to Full Captain on 22 Jan 1864. Promoted to Full Major on 31 Aug 1864. Mustered out on 14 Jul 1865 at Washington, DC."
He married Frances Cornelia Tripp in Boston, Massachusetts on December 15, 1851.
