Henry "Clay" Bishop was born on July 2, 1908 in Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee, the son of Linus Lee Bishop (1879–1959) and Anna Eliza "Lizzie" (Murphy) Bishop (1880–1954).

He was married to Cora Lee Dilley (1909–1998) on January 18, 1930 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, and she was the daughter of John Wilson David Dilley and Nancy Jane (Bailey) Dilley. Clay and Cora were divorced the next year.

Clay enlisted in the US Army on June 18, 1941 and was released on November 14th of that same year: He re-enlisted on February 27, 1942 and was discharged on November 18, 1945.

He was 64 years old when he passed away on October 23, 1972 and was buried in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Montgomery County.
