J.B. Gilbert was a pioneer of Spokane County, coming to the area in the Fall of 1880 from Oregon with his first wife Irena Diantha (Watts) Gilbert, whom he married on Feb 26, 1873 in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. J.B.'s parents were Oregon Territory pioneers, who left the Midwest in 1847, traveling by oxcart, and arrived in Oregon in early November of that year, settling the following year in what is now Benton County, Oregon. Jesse Belknap Gilbert was a businessman and public servant. He served as a Washington state representative in Olympia for District 3 for three separate terms, in 1907 (elected in 1906 with 1,419 votes), 1919 (elected in 1918 with 3,578 votes), and one final time in 1929 (elected in 1928 with 10,688 votes). He was also one of the founders of the town of Rockford, Spokane County, Washington, serving the town in a number of capacities over many decades. There are several pages of biography on him in a 1912 book on the history of Spokane County by Nelson Wayne Durham (on pages 750-752). The book, now in the public domain, can be read at Google Books.

He enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles in later life and taught at least one great-granddaughter to enjoy them too. He always dressed very nicely and (according to the same great-granddaughter) was a ladies man.

He is buried just to the left of his first wife, but with no head stone or marker.

Second wife: Ella D. (Woodmansee) Gilbert (1856-1920, cremated)
