MIDLAND Doyle ~ Carey McManus, 86, of Midland, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Hospice of Union County in Monroe, following a short illness.

Mr. McManus was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Midland, Mecklenburg County, to the late Willis Alfred McManus Sr. and Carrie Biggers McManus.

Mr. McManus was the 11th of 16 children born to his parents. He was also preceded in death by 13 siblings; wife, Eloise Balkcum McManus (married 53 years); and son, Dennis McManus.

Mr. McManus served in the Army Air Force after graduating from Bain School in Mint Hill. He served in the Phillipines during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Mint Hill VFW. He was a licensed electrician by trade and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 379. After retirement, Mr. McManus worked at Hartsell Funeral Home for approximately 16 years.

He was a charter member of his church, United Love Baptist Church, Midland. He served in various capacities. He also went on mission trips in the states and other countries through the N.C. Baptist Men. He loved the Lord, and we know he is well and happy now to be in heaven with his family and friends who preceded him. Mr. McManus had a fun loving nature that was contagious!

He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather; great brother and faithful friend. His family meant everything to him. Any time someone had a need, he was always there to help. His favorite activity was gardening and canning every summer and sharing what he harvested with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends at United Love Baptist Church 11487 Flowes Store Rd., Midland today (Friday, Oct. 25), from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow at the church at 2 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Marvin Tyson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
