BIOGRAPHY of Jodean "Jo" Elliott-Blakeslee, M.D.
Jo is a dynamic and smart woman. Her experiences have taken her around the world and, notwithstanding the accolades, she has focused her energy on those whose futures she hopes to improve. She believes in hard work, academic rigor, science and keeping the faith. With that background, she has had the confidence and intelligence to excel and thrive. She spent time in the desert lands of eastern Idaho studying wild horses and ventured to faraway corners of the globe providing medical care. Always, her goal has been to improve the health and education of others.
Jo was born on April 18, 1950 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Her parents, Joan and Dean Blakeslee, along with her grandparents, were dedicated to her education and happiness. Jo graduated from Mountain Home High School and began her undergraduate studies at Concordia. She later received her Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Zoology from Idaho State University. She went on to receive her M.D. from the University of Washington Medical School.
In keeping with her commitment to serve, Dr. Jo and another family member became medical missionaries in the Central African Republic of Cameroon. To prepare, they first moved to France and studied the specific language dialects native to the village and surrounding areas. The mission, through the Lutheran Church, continued for two years during which time Dr. Jo worked tirelessly. It was also during that mission that Jo met Amy Linkert who was also serving a mission with her family in Africa.
After returning to the United States, Jo served in the Naval Reserves as an officer, later retiring as a Commander in the 1990s. Her medical career included private practice in Washington and Idaho and she was Chief of Staff at Group Health in Federal Way, Washington. She eventually left Seattle to return to Boise where she worked in private practice before joining the medical facility at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, Oregon.
Jo's faith focuses on others. Her particular passion is to assist individuals and communities in need of healthcare and education. Jo is a member of the Wright Community Congregational United Church of Christ and previously served as Moderator and in other capacities in that fellowship.
Jo is an active member of the community in the areas of public service and education. She works to promote higher learning and scholarship and specifically, Idaho State University and its educational mission. She is an active member of ISU Alumni Association and was the 2006 President's Medallion recipient.

ARCO, Idaho - The body of a hiker missing in Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve has been found, according to a news release Wednesday.
A helicopter search of the lava fields north and west of the Tree Molds Trail early Tuesday evening yielded the location of Dr. Jodean "Jo" Elliott-Blakeslee. Her body was found about a mile from where searchers earlier found the body of her hiking partner Amelia "Amy" Linkert.
A final determination of cause of death is pending the investigation by the coroner and law enforcement personnel.
Elliott-Blakeslee and Linkert were reported missing Sept. 24 and had last been seen Sept. 19 at a campground in Arco. Their vehicle was found at the Tree Molds Trailhead parking lot, a popular hiking area in the Monument.
Elliott-Blakeslee, 63, worked as a physician in the Boise area and for the Oregon Department of Corrections in Ontario. Linkert was retired from the Meridian School District and would have been 70 on Sept. 26.
"We hope that this will bring closure to her family, friends and all those who been involved in the search. We join the family in thanking the searchers and local communities for the tremendous outpouring of support that we have received throughout this intense effort," said Park Superintendent Dan Buckley.
