Boyd “J” Reed, 84, of 145 Cascade Drive; Bowman, SC died Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at his residence. Born June 1, 1931 in Daniels, Idaho, county of Oneida, to the parents of William John Reed and Rosa Clara Newhouse Reed. He is presently married to Jewel Bair Reed living near Bowman, SC, Orangeburg County.
He has one step-daughter; Linda (Herbert) Wiles of Orangeburg, SC.
He has four sisters and a brother: Elaine Reed (deceased), Mildred Reed Evans (deceased), Merle Reed Nault (Temecula, CA), William Cleon Reed (Red Mountain, CA) and Norma Jean Reed Rasmussen (deceased).
Educated in the Idaho Public School System, through the eighth grade and graduated as a senior (12th grade) from Malad City High School in May 1949. He worked at a very early age as a general farm and ranch hand in Daniels, Idaho and Arco, Idaho, then in Dillon, Montana until 1951. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy, March 26, 1951, served on a submarine tender, then assigned to Mine Craft for the remainder of his duty in the Atlantic, until his Honorable discharge on, 15 March 1956, having served 11 months and 20 days; completing four years, five months and eight days of foreign/sea duty. After discharge from the Navy, he worked for “The Charleston Evening Post” for two and a half years, then moved to Roswell, New Mexico for International Harvester, then returned to Charleston, SC, working for Hood Electric Co. until he was employed at the U. S. Naval Ammunition Depot (U. S. Naval Weapons station), where he retired after 26 years, 31 years federal employment, on June 1, 1986. He worked at Ace Hardware, Weathers Dairy and Lowes Home Improvement before quitting at 71 years of age.
He was an active member of “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints” was the Elder Quorum President and holds the office of High Priest. He was a life member of “The National Rifle Association”, life member of “The North American Hunting Club”, annual member of “Wildlife Forever” and a member of “The American Legion Post #64”. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #290, a Scottish Rite Mason (32 deg. KCCH) and a member of the Omar Shrine Temple.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM at the church Monday before the service. Funeral services will be held 11 AM on Monday, October 5, 2015 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints in Orangeburg with burial at Bowman Cemetery with Bishop Jason Ross officiating.
