Driscoll, Jerome Maher "Jerry" CARLSBAD -- Jerome "Jerry" Maher Driscoll passed away at home after a long illness surrounded by his wife and six children. Jerry was born on November 12, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio to Jerry Anthony and Josephine Eulalia Driscoll. Upon graduation from St. Ignatius High School, he was selected into the highly competitive Naval Air College Program (NACP). He earned his BBA from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Public Administration from American University. Jerry advanced through the ranks beginning as a Flying Midshipman and finishing as a Commanding Officer. Already deployed to Japan as a midshipman when the Korean War broke out, Jerry was one of the first US Navy pilots to serve in this conflict. His Navy career spanned 32 years and the entire globe. His numerous assignments included Midway Island, Antarctica, England, and his beloved San Diego where he retired at the rank of Captain. The Driscoll Glacier was named in honor of his work in Antarctica. Five of his children and many of his grandchildren followed him into military service. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years - Rose Marie; his brother, Stephen; children, Michael (Caroline), Patrick, Deborah Ford (Michael), Sharon Conley (Rob), Maureen Marrs (David), and Jerome (Sandi); 17 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Jerry was dedicated to God, family, career, and country, and was always honest, selfless, and tough but fair. The epitome of a family man, Jerry's favorite vacation was hosting family reunions every summer, keeping the extended family close and sharing his Irish heritage. Jerry's spirit is personified by his favorite author's poem "Carry On" and the words on his NACP application: "I want to fly." Jerry, Dad, Grandpa: you will always be our North Star. We will Carry On with you in our hearts as you Fly to your Eternal Home. ~~ May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. ~~ Visitation will be held at El Camino Memorial - Encinitas Chapel on Sunday, October 20 from 4 -7 pm. Services will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church on Monday, October 21 at 10 am. Burial will be at Miramar National Cemetery on Monday, October 21 at 1 pm. Reception will follow at St. Elizabeth Seton church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Aviation Midshipmen Endowment Fund managed by the Flying Midshipmen Association, and/or the research program of the Parkinson's Association of San Diego.
