U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law department of the University of Oklahoma, in 1915, was admitted to the bar in 1918 and commenced to practice law at Walters, Oklahoma. During World War I, he served overseas as a Private in Company L of the 36th Division, U.S. Army. After the war, he was editor of a newspaper in Cotton County, Oklahoma, (1920-22) and a member of the Oklahoma State Senate, (1920-27). In addition, he was a delegate to the peace conference of the Interparliamentary Union at Paris, France and at Geneva, Switzerland, in 1927. In 1927, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventieth Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1947. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed by President Harry S Truman to the U.S. Customs Court in 1947 and served until his death. His son Jed Joseph Johnson Jr. was also a U.S. Congressman.
