U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the Denison University, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1863 and commenced to practice law in Toledo, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney for Muskingum County, Ohio, (1867-71). In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth, and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. After leaving Congress, he moved to New York City, practiced law, returned to Ohio, in 1900 and practiced law until his death.
