He was born one of fourteen children to Julius and Emma Gast in Bridgeman, Michigan.

He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Sargent in 1954. He retired as a Computer Network Coordinator from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Len was a master woodworker and enjoyed building cabinets and furniture. He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
