The son of Stephen B. & Matilda (Seagraves) Atherton, he is not found in any Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, census until 1880.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Middletown, Dauphin County, August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864.

He married Kate C. lnu, but they apparently had no children. By 1880, he held the occupation of machinist and working for a sewing machine company.
