Mr. Berndsen operated the George Berndsen Building Co. and had served as financial secretary of Local 1602 Carpenters Union. He was a member of the St. Joseph Men's Society of St. Teresa of Avila Church. He was married to Rosalia Berndsen, who died in 1915, leaving a daughter Helen Bagby. He married his second wife Erma Papner Berndsen, who died in 1991, and left two sons Walter (d. 2003) and Alfred (d. 1999). His youngest son George, jr. died in 1959.

He had two brothers and a sister, Lawrence Frederick and Joseph H., Frances B. Geiler. His parents were George Berndsen (d. 1927) and Mary Margaret Fledderman Berndsen (d. 1917).
