Buck Yates Fondren, 74, of Columbus, died July 5, 2008, at his residence. Mr. Fondren was born Dec. 21, 1933, to the late James Mack and Clemence Shumaker Fondren in Choctaw County. He retired in 1976 from the U.S. Air Force as a senior master sergeant, where he received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the National Defense Service Medal among others. During his service, he was stationed at various locations including Puerto Rico and South Korea. Mr. Fondren retired in 2004 after 27 years of service with United Air Force Contract Management Services in the transportation department as a heavy vehicle/equipment operator at Columbus Air Force Base. He lived in Columbus for the past 36 years, having moved there from San Antonio, Texas, and was a member and deacon of Fairview Baptist Church and a member of the 55+ choir.
Mr. Fondren was also a member of the Air Force Association, Flotilla 86, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Moore's Creek Boat Owners Association. He was a past member of East Columbus Lions Club and Masonic Lodge #184 Mathiston. Survivors include his wife, Peggy J. Fondren of Columbus; three daughters, Mona Varner and husband, David, of Madison, Sharon Eads and husband, Ken, of Columbus, and Cheryl Connelly and husband, John, of Fredonia, N.Y.; a sister, Kathleen Briggs of Nesbit; three brothers, Waymon Fondren of Mathiston, Wayne Fondren of Oxford and John Fondren of Starkville; four grandchildren, Jennifer Varner, Mandy Varner, Sarah Beth Eads and Miranda Fosberg; a great-grandson, Samuel Connor Fosberg; eight nephews and five nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise Fondren; two brothers, Gary W. Fondren and Stantford Fondren; a grandson, Nash Grayson Eads; and a great-grandson, Jacob Reid Fosberg. Pallbearers were Ray Adair, Ralph Blackstock, David Fondren, James Hargett, Roland Hill, Cliff Loden, James Oliver and James Vaughn. Honorary pallbearers were Craig Barfield, J.C. Cates, Ray Crosby, Billy Crossley, Denny Fondren, Jimmy Fondren, Joe Fondren, Johnny Fondren, Mack Fondren, Max Fondren, Steve Fondren, Dr. Doug Hill, Don Johnson, Jerry Marshall, Al McAlexander, Archie Moore, Slater Murphy, Jerry Owen, Charlie Watkins, Wayne West, members of the James Oliver Sunday School Class and all widows from his deacon family ministry.
Services were July 7 at Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Sammy Crawford officiating, and the Revs. Mickey Dalrymple and Tommy Gillon assisting.
