World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Jarrow, England, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1/4th Battalion King's Own Regiment, British Army. In actions near Givenchy, France, April 9, 1918, 2nd Lieutenant Collin after withstanding resistance against heavy enemy fire, held by his platoon with only five of his men remaining. The enemy were pressing hard with machine-gun fire from close range, when 2nd Lieutenant Collin single-handed with his revolver attacked the machine gun putting the gun out of action, killing four of the team and wounding two others. Observing a second machine gun firing, he took a Lewis gun and a high point of vantage where he could engage the gun and kept them enemy at bay until he fell mortally wounded. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awared the Victoria Cross on June 25, 1918.
