In 1850 Uncle Cyrus Curtiss writes: - "If you wish to find the noblest and meanest; the most generous and the most penurious; the most sincere and the most hypocritical specimens of humanity come to Illinois and you cannot fail. but much to my satisfaction I find among them a "right smart sprinkle" of that Charity, which believeth all things, and which has been sorely tested by speculators of all descriptions".

"I always call it home at Uncle Homer's and so do half the world beside, for they hold taverns in utter contempt, when they get within ten miles of there."
