Hampton's NC Troops, Revolutionary War
During the Revolutionary War, according to local tradition, Preston Goforth was killed with a bullet from his own brother. When he didn't return home after the battle, his wife, riding a two-runner sled, driven by an ox, went to the battlefield in search of her husband.
After several hours of searching, she located his dead body, put it on the sled and asked neighbors for help on burying him. He was buried in the backyard. The date was October 8, 1780.
