Second Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland, he served as a Corporal in the 66th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, British Army. At Colenso, South Africa, on the December 15, 1899, the detachments serving the guns of the 14th and 66th Batteries, Royal Field Artillery, had either been killed, wounded, or driven from their guns by infantry fire at close range and the guns were deserted. Behind the guns was a donga in which some of the few horses and drivers left alive and were being swept with shell and rifle fire. Corporal Nurse, volunteered with a few comrades to assist, go out, to hook a team into a limber and assisted to limber up a gun. During this movement, he helped two wounded officers and brought them back to safety. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross on February 2, 1900. He died at age 72 in Liverpool, England.
