NEW BERLIN — Robert Gleason Stage, 68, of New Berlin, died June 20, 2003, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital, after a tough battle with cancer.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1935, in Cortland, the son of Robert G. Stage and Flora (Nightengale) Stage Mowers.

He was married to Julia Hendrickson Stage for 42 1/2 years. She survives.

During Bob's life, his greatest joys were playing his guitar and calling square dances with several different bands. He also enjoyed bowling and playing bingo.

He worked for Merritt Moore in a three-man saw mill, and then went on to work for 31 years at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford. After his retirement in 1997, he went to work part-time at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, putting away stock for the kitchen. He also helped the staff as much as possible when they were shorthanded or when preparing special dinners. He was no longer able to work there after Jan. 3 because of ill health.

Mr. Stage is survived by his wife, Julia; one daughter, Rebecca and her husband, Theodore, Ritchey; three sons, Randy and wife, Colleen, Keith and wife, Jodi, and Kurt and fiancee, Gwen F. Kinch; four grandsons, Joseph and Andrew Ritchey, and Nicholas and Justin Stage; one granddaughter, Kayla Stage; two sisters, Betty Ryan, Oxford, and Shirley and husband, Norman, Mowers, Norwich; five grandnieces and nephews; many close friends; and former co-workers.

He was predeceased by his father, Robert Stage; stepfather, Ray Mowers; mother, Flora Mowers; and one brother, Lynn Mowers.
