Eli was an asbestos pipe fitter who was a prominent member of Brooklyn Society. He and his family were the first people in their neighborhood to own a car, since Eli personally knew Henry Ford. He and his wife were very wealthy and all of their children were privately tutored.

Eli's last name was originally Tucker, but when his mother remarried Eli A. Kellam about 1877, all children of Tucker took the name Kellam. Because his stepfather's name was also Eli Albert, Eli Tucker Kellam was called "Bertie" as a child.
